New College mourns Mr Tung Chee-hwa

It is with great sadness that New College learns of the death of Mr Tung Chee-hwa.

Mr Tung’s public life coincided with a consequential period in Hong Kong’s development. His sustained interest in education, research and innovation reflected a conviction that universities have responsibilities extending beyond their campuses: to cultivate ability, to advance knowledge, and to contribute to the wider community.

His passing is felt especially keenly at New College. The College was named in recognition of the generous support of the Tung Foundation, and this association remains a valued part of our identity. That support has enabled New College to provide a residential setting in which students from different disciplines and backgrounds may live, learn and develop alongside one another.

For members of the College, the connection is therefore more than commemorative. It is a continuing reminder of Mr Tung’s regard for higher education and of his concern for the opportunities available to younger generations. The benefits of that commitment are experienced in the everyday life of the College and will continue to be recognised by those who join our community in the years ahead.

On behalf of the Fellows, staff, students and alumni of New College, I offer our sincere condolences to the Tung family. We remember Mr Tung with respect and gratitude, and we acknowledge the enduring place that his support for education holds in the history of our College.
