Hey, New College Neighbours! As we are heading for the end of the semester, we’re all feeling the pressure of the upcoming final exams in December. To ensure you sail smoothly through this tough period, we have prepared some helpful exam tips you can utilise!
Make a study schedule to plan your study.
Time management is one of the most important points to consider when studying a semester-worth (huge!) load study. Start by reviewing the exam dates and looking through the syllabus. From there, create a study schedule that balances a manageable workload and rest that best suits you.
Prioritise subjects that you find challenging the most.
Use calendar apps to make sure you stay on track. (I personally recommend using a basic study timer app to minimise distractions)
Try to make your schedule as detailed as possible. If your plan is too vague, you might end up ditching it!
Find your ideal study space.
Whether it is your room, Chi Wah Learning Commons, or the Library, it is important to find a place to concentrate to make the most of your studying time. Here are a few recommendations:
The university offers additional study spaces in the central classrooms across the campus during the revision and exam weeks (Dec 2 - 23). Check the student portal for more information.
Did you know New College has a study room in the 3/F common area? Make sure to check this out!
Use active study techniques.
Instead of passively reading your notes, engage with the material using active study methods. These techniques help you retain information more effectively.
Summarise key points in your own words.
Try teaching someone else - explaining concepts to a friend will strengthen your understanding.
Practice past papers to familiarise yourself with the exam format and types of questions asked.
Use flashcards for quick memory recall (apps like Quizlet are great for this).
Stay positive and avoid comparison.
When everyone around you is discussing their revision progress, it's simple to become caught up in the comparison trap. But keep in mind that every student learns uniquely! Don't compare your progress to others; instead, concentrate on your own path.
If you find out that you need some more help, you can always book a counselling session with CEDARS.
Don't forget to reward yourself.
Finally, remember to celebrate small victories along the way. Finished revising a small chapter? Treat yourself to a well-deserved rest and do something you like. After all, a balanced approach to studying is important to stay motivated during the exam period.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to acing your exams. As always, New College is your home away from home, so don’t hesitate to lean on your fellow residents for support. We’re all in this together!
